Well, I went to Santa Monica High, and honestly I think of Harvard westlake as a very pretentious school. There are many other, and better private schools in the LA area such as Brentwood, and Marlborough

Also, I know there are language schools in LA, but would they be very useful if you were a child, but could already speak Russian? (NOTE: I am asking this on behalf of my cousin who has lived in Russia for four years. She has a six year old son who was not born in Russia but can speak fluent Russian. My cousin cannot speak Russian as good, and does not want her son to forget the language. I don't know of any Russian-language schools as such, although there may be some, but the area of West Hollywood, which is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, has a large Russian-speaking population, particularly around the area of Plummer Park. In the 2000 census, 18.6 % of the West Hollywood residents claimed Russian heritage and the libraries have heaps of books in Russian and Ukrainian. I imagine the elementary schools have plenty of bilingual personnel, including teaching assistants, since West Hollywood is a magnet for recent immigrants. LA Film School gives out associate degrees, and it's reputation isn't at the top of the charts (it's a fairly new school, and just started giving out actual degrees a couple years ago)... so it may be better to try to get a Bachelor's in Film from a reputable school in that field (UCLA, UT-Austin, etc.) You do learn a lot there, however.. and the networking is very good (which is important for someone trying to get into that business). All the professor's are those that are in the business, so they know what's going on. My friend goes there, he has yet to graduate so I can say as to how things are after graduation.. but he currently has a job at Universal Studios working on sets. It's not his long-term goal, but it will help with the networking and get him in... and it was one of his professor's that hooked him up with the job. So they are willing to help you in the ways they can. It's hard to me to recommend to you what to do here, since with film you really either have it or you don't... so I just thought I'd share what I do know and maybe help you out a little through that.

don't go to film school. use the money you would have used to pay for tuition to shoot a few short films-- it'll save you four years of mostly worthless work.

I can't answer your question, but I'd suggest that you ask a lot of questions about both schools. How long have they been in business? What percentage of entering students graduate? For the ones who don't graduate, why do they leave school? (If they are getting jobs in the industry, fine. If not, are they leaving because they've flunked out, can't afford to attend any longer, are transferring to other schools, or some other reason?) How many graduates have they produced? What percentage of those graduates are currently working in the field of music production? What kinds of jobs do they hold? How long does it take the average grad to find a job? What percentage of them are employed at graduation? What kind of salaries are they making? What kind of internships are available through the school? (This is important because it provides work experience and contacts in the business.) What percentage of students do internships? (If there are a limited number of internships, then you may not be getting the experience or contacts you'll need.) Do any record companies/production companies recruit at the school or are students on their own after graduation when it comes to finding a job? Is a four-year degree really necessary to become a record producer? Ask about the curriculum -- what would you be studying? Is the course load entirely oriented toward the music business or would you also be required to take math/English, etc. similar to a regular university? What are the advantages of attending that particular school vs. other school? You need to ask the hard questions of the admissions people rather than just being dazzled by the possibilities. The biggest school district here is Los Angeles Unified School district and it covers many cities. I recommend that you go to a nice and educational environment. Don't assit any schools that are in Central or South Central area. Probably not any urbanized location since there is alot of pressure, drugs, and gangs. Note: Many schools that are nice do have pressure and drugs but it isn't too bad. The best thing to do is to enter a school in a suburban area. They are usually nice and clean. You other option is entering a private school.

LA is a big place and I can’t tell you ALL of the areas, but Torrance and Palos Verdes have really good schools that always rank high in the state and are in very safe clean areas. Your best bet is to find an area you want to live and choose one that has its school district that is not part of LA Unified. Also consider Orange County.

It all depends on the area and where you live. If you have a car or a designated/reliable driver. Then most schools well say OK, but if your asking for district bus transportation to a school you live nowhere near then they'll most likely say no and direct you to a school they know is near to you.

You would have to request a permit from the LAUSD or the school district where the high school is located. There are intra-district (in the same district yo live in) and inter-district permits (in a different school district). Look up info on the school district website. You would not be able to get a permit from Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills High, they are not giving permits for high school kids now. It is very difficult to get permits to desirable schools, as they are usually full, because people move to those areas for the schools. Look at the lists and then look at the district website for that school to see what you need to do to get a permit. It may not be possible. Also, you can look at the school's website to see if there is admissions info. Do it quickly, as some schools start looking at permit applications soon. I would recommend going to a local tutoring agency. Although they cost more than hiring a tutor personally, they guarantee a certain level of quality.Also, they offer money back, or free trial hour deals. The one I used was LA Tutors 123 and the tutor they sent me was great. Hope that helps!

She will likely have to go to her neighborhood school, it's tough to get permits into the top schools in the LAUSD, because lots of families in those neighborhoods have taken their kids out of private school and put them into public school, so they are filled to capacity. It's even harder to get permits to good schools in other districts, and LAUSD doesn't like to release their students because it means less money for them. There are some public charter and magnet schools, but it's not a sure thing that she'll get in. You can look up the ratings of public schools on the websites below. But some schools that have a wider range of students (so a mix of standardized test scores), or small schools within the school, can be quite good even if their rating is on the low side. Public School Ratings: http://www.greatschools.org/ http://www.schooldigger.com/ Unfortunately, even the top public schools (and I don't mean LAUSD, but better public schools like San Marino, La Canada, South Pasadena) really can't compare to the local private schools, especially the top private schools. Are you going to apply to private school and see about financial aid? There is more aid available in high school than in K - 8. You never know, it's worth filling out an application. (I'm surprised at some of the people who get aid, especially if the school wants the student, the financial cut off seems to be higher than one would expect.) Generally, only one or two administrators at the school are aware of who is receiving aid, and it some local schools it's up to 25% of the students are receiving some amount of aid. (Often the kids mention it to their friends, no one thinks it's a big deal, it's not shameful.) The Catholic schools in LA tend to be about half the tuition of the private prep schools, and some of them are very open to non-Catholic students, they may have 30% or more. The impact of the culture of the students, is that the students vary widely in their SES's (socio-economic statuses). That means, there are some really rich kids, some kids in the middle, and some really poor kids. Also, it's a huge school district, so the fact that it has so many cultures (ethnic groups of students) in it means the teachers have to teach kids who speak lots of different languages, which makes teaching them very much harder.

Why can't she just go to her local high school? School will be over for the summer long before the baby is born. If there is some reason she can't go there, she should still check with the local school. They can refer her to an alternative school, or a GED program.

She should go to the school district and ask to be placed in the local high school. Any school will accept a pregnant student-- the question is figuring out which school a person living at her address is supposed to go to. (That's the school that will provide free transportation; she's free to go to any public school she wants, I think, but only one of them will provide her with a schoolbus.)

Neither is better than the other, it depends on which school is the best fit for you. Archer might be a little more academic, but not by much. Marymount is Catholic and tuition is a bit less (common for Catholic schools). The schools are rather similar in the scheme of things. Go to the Open Houses and visit the schools and see what you think. My son figured out immediately which was the best school for him when he was looking at private high schools last year. And he was right, he loves his school, even though it's extremely rigorous and he has 4 - 5 hours of homework a night. But it's the right fit for him. Be sure to stud for the entrance exam (ISEE, HSPT, SSAT). You can get test prep books at amazon.com or you might want to see about tutoring. All of these girls schools have something to offer. I really haven't heard anything about it. Of course USC is the best in the state, if not the country. I went to NYU so I am biased. But - I have some co-workers who graduated from Cal. State Fullerton and Cal. State Long Beach if you're looking for a cheaper option. My suggestion would be to get a list of alumni and their contacts from the school and ask them.

I'm considering the weekend Mixology course. I would like to learn how to make mixed drinks for fun, and to add a little flair to my private parties. The cost for this program is $395. Recommendations? this is totally for personal enrichment, i just want to be able to add a little somethin' fun and sassy to parties. I don't want to be a bartender, i don't think I have the kind of personality to deal with some of the situations bartenders see and deal with on any given evening. If you are doing it just for fun and your own knowledge, and the school is reputable, go for it. If you are looking to get a job as a bartender though, don't go. These schools can't teach you what it's like to be behind a busy bar. If you are looking for a cheaper method there are lots of good bartending books out there like Mr. Boston's -try Amazon or your local book store.

You could buy a lot of books or videos for that price. Plus, you could always refer back to them when needed. It also depends on how serious you want to get with cocktails. Plus, if you're anything like me, you'll forget what you learned before you get the opportunity to use them.

Here's the recipe from LAUSD website (that Suebee linked to): Old Fashioned Coffee Cake, recipe from 1954 3 3/4 cups all purpose flour 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp. non-fat dry milk 1 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 3 1/2 tsp. baking powder 3/4 tsp. baking soda 1 1/4 cups brown sugar, packed 2 tbsp. vinegar 1 1/2 cups water 1 cup plus 2 tbsp. oil 1 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs Topping: 3/4 cup plus 3 tbsp. all purpose flour 1/4 cup plus 1 tbsp. brown sugar, packed 1/4 cup granulated sugar dash of salt 1/4 plus 1/8 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 plus 1/8 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 cup salad oil Makes 18 servings Oven temperature: 375 degrees Baking time: 45 to 55 minutes Directions for cake: 1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees 2) In a bowl, combine flour, dry milk, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, baking powder and baking soda. Set aside. 3) Combine vinegar and water in a measuring cup. Set aside. 4) In mixer bowl, blend together the oil, brown sugar and granulated sugar on low speed for 1 minute. 5) Add eggs and continue to blend on low speed for 1 minute. 6) While mixer is on low speed, alternately add the dry ingredients and the water-vinegar mixture to the oil-sugar mixture. Scrape down bowl and blend on medium speed for an additional 1 minute. 7) Evenly divide batter between 2 greased 9"X9" pans. Sprinkle 3/4 cup topping evenly over batter in each pan. 8) Bake until toothpick comes out clean when inserted in center of cake. Approximately, 45-55 minutes. Directions for topping: 1) In mixer bowl, combine all ingredients except oil. blend on low speed for 1 minute. 2) Add oil gradually and continue to blend until topping is crumbly. well i am not sure about a school district but most places have a phone number or web address if you just call the number for the main office they mite be able to help but to do the work you are gonna have to be on a venders list so when you do call ask for a contracting department and then ask them how and what you need to get on the school districts vendor list . with some states, cities , counties, and school districts it can be a pain in the ass but work through it and in the end it is worth it . good luck and sorry i couldnt hellp you any more then that

It's never too late. USC is commonly thought to be the best film school in Los Angeles. UCLA and Santa Monica College all have programs as well. There are even private institutions like www.hollywoodu.com that offer excellent but abbreviated courses on the business of being a filmmaker.

Certainly one might hope you do more than just "Visit" any school you choose. Obviously if you live local to that one, then logic suggests that's the school for you,,, BUT all schools educate in some different formats, and a director, eventually, hated or loved, develops a personality that becomes known, as much as being known for directing skills. You can get as much from any School that offers stage or screen direction courses, and I suggest learn everything about the craft, from any lighting, rigging, blocking, methodologies, to where the catering carts will be.

You likely will have to live in the district and in the neighborhood of the school you will attend, if you go to public school. The *best* schools are in very expensive neighborhoods, think a million or more for a small home. But you don't need to go to the *best*, check out community colleges near where you will be living in LA, search their website for high school and something will come up. Last year my brother went to Insight and it took them forever to do anything and they even told all of the students to strive for a D so they can pass. It isn't just LA, it is the entire state. The governor, who ahem, was suppose to be our financial savior, has been in a feud with the legislature and neither can come to an agreement on money. The state, therefore, is running without knowing how much money they have to spend. School Districts have to be careful because the governor has said he won't approve a budget that doesn't cut school budgets. The whole thing is a mess!

I've just been through this research due to an impending SoCal move and can share that these are supposedly the top elementary schools based on test schools and high parent involvement (I think most had good family-supported art curriculum, too, but I"m not sure): Clover Ave Elementary, Fairburn Ave, Hancok Park, Kenter Canyon, Mar Vista, Milgro, Roscomare Road, Third Street, Warner Ave, Wonderland Ave. You can check out details include parent reviews at GreatSchools.net. Thanks for the school name. It does make a difference. Is it possible? Yes. Convenient? NO. It's 20 miles, in which you will have to pass downtown. You'll be lucky to do it in an hour. I would highly recommend looking for something around Playa Del Rey, Marina Del Rey, Redondo Beach, etc. The commute is a killer.

It is 28 miles from west Pasadena to LMU, if you're on the east side of Pasadena, it's over 30 miles each way. It would take about 40 minutes to get to LMU from west Pasadena if the traffic is moving well, but it can take over 1 1/2 hours when traffic is slow. If you have great housing in Pasadena, then it might be worth the time and gas expense to you. But have you looked into LMU housing? It's like $8000 - $10000 a year. You could also look for off-campus housing, they probably have help with that on their website. Remember, beyond gas expense, there are tires, mechanical, etc and your time and major stress!

you can still do using transit services it wiil take you about 2 hours for this commute ( day pass or better yet a ez pass would be the best bet here) since one of the connecting transit systems in this routing doesnt honor metro day passes but they do honor the EZ pass from Pasadena you can take the Gold Line into Union station then board Line 33 (bay 6) take the 33 to Lincoln/Venice then transfer to the Santa Monica line #3 bus to LMU another routing would take the gold line to union station then catch one of the 445, 446, 447 buses take any of these buses to the manchester station transfer again to the Manchester rapid bus to Sepulevda/Manchester and then transfer again to the Santa Monica bus to LMU

I went through all this too, but what I finally did was just go to a bar and get a job helping the bartender and they taught me all I needed to know for free. Those schools are expensive and not necessarily needed. I'm just saying...................

nobody hires people out of bartending school despite what that school promises you. apply for a barback job and learn from there and work you way into a bartender job. then apply where you want with bartender experience on your resume. but if you want to go anyways its around $500 for a 2 week class, maybe more in cali, and you learn the basics you can learn while getting paid as a barback anywhere..

What the other people have said is correct. My best friend took one of those classes, and he got certified, but he said in hindsight it was a total waste of money (like $500 bucks). Those bartending schools tend to rip you off. Yes, you'll learn how to make drinks, and how to pour, etc, but they are really expensive. You're better off getting a job at a bar where you can be trained behind the bar, because everywhere I've bartended I haven't needed a bartending school certificate.

To find a place to live: Go to http://losangeles.craigslist.org and look under Housing. You'll find ads posted by people looking for roommates and renting apartments, and browsing them is free. There's also Westside Rentals, but I think they charge a fee to use their service. To find a job: Again, Craigslist is a good place to start. But if you're looking for more part-time stuff, you might have to walk door to door to get it done faster. Some places don't even post jobs online.

Housing: i would recommend that look around your college..they should have a bullentin around there with students posting rooms for rent..i attend Cerritos College, i know its a community college, but by our game room they have a bullentin, and it has all kinds of post for students who need rooms by the school...so im pretty sure they should have some right there, if you cant seem to find it, ask an adminstator they should know.. also if you go to like super markets u can see posting of rooms for rent..some might be students but sometimes families post them because their rent is to high..e.g my bf mom owns a house but since the mortgage is too high she rents the back part..everytime someone moves out, she rents it really fast i gues because her neiborhood is alright.she lives in the good side of lynwood... like right now she has a student renting tha back but the lady has like three kids... but yea getting back to the subject... Jobs: I would recommend the good o fasion way, go ask. You can try the fox hills mall in Culver City or the Creshaw Mall, the creshaw mall is alright just be careful if you are caucasian, indian, or asain, we are mainly use to africans and mexicans...they are alot of rude african americans that go to the creshaw mall or you can try snagajob.com it mainly post jobs from big compainies e.g taco bell, jiffylube etc or Carreerbuilder.com

A lot of the internships at studios are only for college students. The best way to get in is knowing someone at the studio, or if your school has a connection to the studio. Some high schools have programs where you can get internships that usually only college students can get if they applied directly to the studio. Does your school have a job counselor? Ask them. If there is no job counselor, ask the person who handles the student job permits. Do you have a film makers club or class like they do at my son's school? Ask the teacher who runs the class. Network, the more people you tell what you're looking for, the better chance. (Lots of internships are like producer 1 hires producer 2's relative or friend, and producer 2 hires producer 1's relative or friend.) Some internships you might find on your own, like with small independent companies, are with sort of creepy people, so be careful, let your parent check out the situation. Are you looking at private high schools, or public? If public, you may not have much of a choice, beyond your family choosing where to live. If you are looking at private schools, Harvard/Westlake, the Brentwood School, the Archer School for Girls, the Marlborough School, and Marymount High School are good. For private schools, I hate to say it, but most of the L.A. Unified schools are terrible. Of them, the best seem to be in the San Fernando Valley. For example, El Camino Real High School, Taft High School, and Moorpark High School have repeatedly had teams who won the national academic decathlon. Palos Verdes High School is also supposed to be pretty good. When you say "universal", do you mean universities? There are a number of them, depending upon what kind of student you are. Cal Tech is one of the best universities in the country. UCLA and USC, along with the Claremont Colleges, have very strong national reputations. Occidental College and Loyola Marymount are regionally strong.

The best advice I got when I was looking was to try and bar back somewhere first or volunteer your time and get some experience. Most of the time bars don't care about your credentials so school turns out to be a waste of time and money. They want to see that you have actual real life experience. I would recommend memorizing as many drinks as you can and looking at a free bartending online tips types thing. Watch the bartenders at your local bar, ask questions and see if you can start barbacking somewhere to get your foot in the door. Good luck!

Pay varies depending on the district you work for, and if your school is private, charter or public. I work in LAUSD, the biggest district in california - it covers most of Los Angeles. Pay is the same for elementary or secondary. And I'm sure you're fine....it doesn't really matter who else is in the room or where you take it as long as you do well, right? They would have told you if there was an issue with boys coming (and the SATs are on Saturday so it's not like school will be in session anyways) Just focus on studying. (and maybe you'll get lucky and some of the girls will be boy-deprived!) Good luck!

No, not a problem at all. The school is just being used as a facility for the SAT, it's not like you're attending the school. Really, don't feel uncomfortable and don't worry about it, it's not a big deal at all. Kids sign up for whichever location and date works for them, there will be lots of other guys there. And if you're still nervous, consider how structured taking the SAT is, the strict rules, etc. Of course they would have mentioned if it was a girls only SAT. If you don't believe me, call them. SAT Program Customer Service (866) 756-7346 M - F 5am to 6pm PST (8am to 9pm EST) But trust me, dude, I'm a mom. Good luck!

Uh i go there. Um, the school's going thorugh some rough times. Like go there if you wanna do the arts. Academics aren't too amazing. There's lots of shakeups in administration. Email me if you wanna know more...I'll be glad to tell you more stuff about the school cause i dont really wanna type EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT IT without specific questions. ....... In my opinion, its not as amazing as it seems.... It's average, but good for arts. There is no school bus transportation to get there. You must get trasnportation yourself. Also, its hard to get in if you don't live in the area. LAUSD mandated that 70 percent of the studetns must come from the immediate area of the school. and it's extremely late to apply. you can still try to though. if you live in the area, you apply thorugh the belmont zone school of choice i think? if not, its a whole different application. I woudln't know too much because when i applied, you basically just had to write a letter to the school about wanting to go there.

I think the person you were talking to meant in case you become involved with a legal matter that occurs in the school. Like, if example, a parent decides to sue you for something that occurs in the classroom, the district will provide you with an attorney to help in the proceedings. I could be wrong, though, but I've never heard of a district having employee discounts for lawyers for other issues.

You can't get into a nursing internship unless you are a current nursing student. Internships are typically offered in the summer to nursing students who are one year away from graduating from their nursing program and earning their license. They do not take high school students. I would suggest looking into getting certified as a nursing assistant and just getting a summer job working as a CNA.
