I think your first idea about taking acting classes is better than trying to find an agent. You need to make sure you are fairly comfortable where you are first and understand how the business works here. One thing that may help you is the Working Actors Guide http://workingactors.com/ Lots of good resources, but it is just a directory so check out any business before using them. There are dialect coaches listed in there as well if you need help with that. Another good resource is backstage.com as well as the print version. Though you may have a resume in your home country, it would be a real good idea to get some credits locally. Once you've acclimated a bit and you've ben in class a while audition for some thing via backstage.com and actorsaccess.com and try adding some LA credits to your resume before submitting your headshot and resume to agents. If however you had an agent wherever you are from, ask them if they have a good relationship with anyone here in LA and can help set up a meeting. Maybe you can get started sooner that way. Referrals are the best in you can get. As for your original question, one actor's good class may be another's absolutely horrible class. You need to try them out for yourself and see what works for you. Check out the guide and the ads in backstage, call around and don't forget to take good notes. Make a list of questions of things you want to know (how much, what experience does the instructor have, what levels of classes do they teach, what different classes do they have, where would they likely place you to start off, do they allow auditing which is letting you come to one free class to see if it's a good fit for you, etc.) Once you've called several places within your driving comfort zone then hopefully you'll have gotten a feel for which places you'd like to try out. good luck, Marianne

LACC and LAValley are both good schools If you want a more intense (full time) education Pasadena Playhouse, UCLA, USC and Loyola Marymount are good, but all charge $30,000 a year.
